There’s an old joke where a man, stuck on a desert island, finds a bottle washed up on shore.&nbsp; It looks like the classic genie’s bottle – it’s got a cool shape, it’s decorated, it’s got a fancy stopper sealing it shut. The man opens the bottle and, sure enough, there’s a cloud of smoke, and then a genie appears. “I’ll grant you three wishes,” says the genie.&nbsp; Now the man’s been on this island for weeks. He’s thirsty. He’s lived off of rainwater and unripe fruits, which have wrecked his stomach. He’s weak and thinks, “Clearly, I’m hallucinating.”&nbsp; But the genie is still there, waiting, so the man finally says, “Make me a ham sandwich.” And, sure enough, the genie smiles, waves his hands and turns the man into a ham sandwich. He’s bread and meat, maybe some mayo.&nbsp; A crow circles and soon the end is near, and the man, now a sentient ham sandwich, wonders what the hell just happened. Well, that's the joke anyway. From our perspective, it's very clear what happened – the man asked to be turned into a ham sandwich.&nbsp; Of course, he meant that he wanted the genie to prepare for him a ham sandwich, so he could eat that ham sandwich, but that's not exactly what he said, now, is it? Language is, sometimes, important. Just asking a short-order cook to make you a ham sandwich might work well, but asking that of a genie, or a large language model AI, might not work so well.&nbsp; Coding computer programming used to be a lot like that. People would enter in code, and, as they say, garbage in, garbage out. The code would have to be perfect, or the program would be buggy.&nbsp; And, to be clear, a lot of coding still works exactly that way. The majority of coding is done like how we generally think of it – entering lines of code that are indecipherable to us average humans but are electronic poetry to coders. But coding, at least some of it, is changing.&nbsp; Most people familiar with programs like ChatGPT know that you can simply ask ChatGPT to write you code for a website. This may be a limited feature currently, but it's certainly getting more advanced, and it's likely that, relatively soon, standard English will be a prevalent coding language.&nbsp; And this brings us back to our genie. Being proficient at written language, when coding, is becoming an increasingly important skill. For years we’ve prioritized STEM over things like language arts. But it’s likely that, alongside standard coding, there’s going to be a) a significant need for coders proficient in the language arts, b) an increased need for prompt engineers proficient in language skills, and c) a need for proficiency in language skill simply to be able to effectively use large language model AI.&nbsp; So, there’s certainly a need to pay attention in math class or science class, but English class may have more practical STEM applications than many currently think.&nbsp;

Last year, my daughter took the state-mandated test required of all students in her grade, but, instead of a team of teachers and other professionals grading it, it was done by <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/04/09/staar-artificial-intelligence-computer-grading-texas/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">AI grading</a>.&nbsp; I don’t love this.&nbsp; I’ve worked in education long enough and have worked with AI long enough to know that AI does some things really well, but it simply <a href="https://thesuccessfinder.com/tech-finance/ai-in-education-has-its-limits" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">cannot do other things</a> (yet).&nbsp; My initial concern, of course, is that novel, creative writing will be penalized and rote, average writing will be rewarded. It’s not a great outcome, and it will generally prompt teachers to teach and reward average writing.&nbsp; But there’s another concern. Why is my kid providing content to help tech companies refine large language models for their generative AI?&nbsp;Just this year, <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2024/02/19/reddit-user-content-being-sold/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Reddit sold access</a> to its posts to an AI company for $60M. “AI companies like OpenAI have so far been training their large language models by scraping data from the web without seeking permission from either websites or users.”&nbsp; Is this happening at the state level, with students required by the state to provide such content? <a href="https://www.salesforce.com/news/press-releases/2023/09/11/salesforce-education-grant-2023-dreamforce/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">It is</a>, to some extent, though the financial details are unclear. Now, Reddit has about 73M active daily users, and even the states with the largest public school systems (California with about 6M, Texas with 5.8M, and Florida with about 3M) provide significantly less content.&nbsp; Still, one wonders about the advisability of machine learning as a way to evaluate student writing. Is it producing learning gains or stifling them? Is there labor involved? If so, how is it being compensated? Are there <a href="https://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/research-support/copyright-guidance/copyright-students#:~:text=%E2%80%9CStudents%20typically%20will%20own%20the,%2C%20scholarly%2C%20and%20administrative%20purposes." rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">copyright issues?</a> “Students typically will own the copyright to works created as a requirement of their coursework, degree, or certificate program.”&nbsp;A school, “however, retains the right to use student works for pedagogical, scholarly, and administrative purposes.”&nbsp; What does this mean in the context of AI grading papers? In short, parents are right to be skeptical of this practice, and it’s just more evidence to suggest that, while AI certainly has an important role to play in education, it’s still in the early stages of adoption, and we’re not entirely clear as to the ramifications of its use – not just educationally, but also legally, socially, and societally.&nbsp;

While most students seem to be really excited to use AI in education, some teachers have mixed feelings. I've taught for a number of years, and I still do quite a bit of work with AI. When my daughter gets stuck on her math homework, and I can't figure out the answer myself, we usually ask ChatGPT for help. I use ChatGPT 4.0, and it generally gives us what we need.&nbsp; If we ask for help setting up a problem, it can do that. If we're working on a problem and get stuck, I can take a photograph of our work, upload it to ChatGPT, and it can tell us where we went wrong. We could, of course, ask it to solve the problem for us outright, but that's not exactly helpful when it comes to test time, so we usually use it as an at-home teacher, and it works great for that. I don't teach in the classroom anymore, but I'm still involved in education on a number of fronts. A few months ago, I worked with a former colleague, thinking that it would be pretty easy to have ChatGPT generate quizzes and grade those quizzes.&nbsp; With this approach, we could differentiate the material seamlessly, creating different quizzes for different students based on where they were academically. Coordination (joining two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction or conjunctive adverb) and subordination (joining two independent clauses with a subordinating conjunction) seemed like a pretty straightforward exercise, but it was immediately a disaster.&nbsp; ChatGPT can't get the hang of this very simple thing. I keep trying, trying to teach ChatGPT how to work through these problems, but it simply can't.&nbsp; Before I sat down to type this, I ran through a series of exercises with ChatGPT 4.0, trying to get it to make a five-question quiz on coordination. ChatGPT 4.0 is the latest build for which I have access: <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_f83cf23322079da9b6e58cad6316803b1725636032342.png"> <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_2600d0a1a24dd227aefae7dc35c22ed81725636048585.png"> Chatty (which is what I’ve named my AI) knocked it out of the park with this one. This is a good and legitimate test, and I was quickly able to work through each problem and arrive at a correct answer. <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_f68526d1e55321caf23241714688b2fe1725636072378.png"> I was expecting this, though. Chatty always does great with true and false stuff (for this topic).&nbsp; The real test was going to be whether Chatty could construct a multiple-choice test. Most teachers will tell you that multiple-choice quizzes are the best way to figure out if a kid really knows something or not. <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_5120c709eb36f5b28ff8f6d0cc2218861725636087377.png"> So far so good. The first two looked solid (and the answers are C and B). Question number 3, though … <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_bf79c99f56d21ef17059acec196040681725636108615.png"> I immediately knew where Chatty was going here – she was going to say that C was the correct answer, but it’s not. As she said in the question 4 response for the true/false test, each clause must be able to stand alone as a complete sentence. "She likes to draw" is a complete sentence, but "paint" is not. For C to be correct, it would have to be "She likes to draw, and she likes to paint."&nbsp; This is a pretty basic thing, and plenty of children are able to do this kind of work by themselves daily. It's particularly frustrating because ChatGPT's own logic knows the rules to this, but it can't seem to put those rules into practice for this one particular topic.&nbsp; I've worked with ChatGPT quite a bit, but it never seems to learn. It's not like the definition of a clause is ambiguous, either. It's simply a collection of words that has both an identifiable subject and a complete verb, forming a complete thought. Anyway, I decided to give Chatty some guidance. I answered “none” for the broken question: <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_7de64f5999f5db98685fea4edcd19d341725636122704.png"> I asked Chatty to justify her reasoning for question 3: <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_b70717b82b77e847ccf585cd4e2572c61725636137579.png"> She didn’t come out and admit to being wrong, but she sort of conceded the point. I wasn’t going to let it go, though: <img src="https://successfinder-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/media/success_finder_83c92035a9300bfb5861d9fa1fdf8e961725636152525.png"> My point with this basic example is that AI is not quite there yet. Not in regard to this aspect of education, at least. From what I can see, ChatGPT cannot successfully teach or even solve problems related to clause coordination.&nbsp; There's definitely a place for AI in education, and AI is getting better every day. But I've been working with AI for the last three or four months on this one specific thing, and it's never been able to crack that nut.
